“Serenades of Summertime”

The birds are eating all the cherries,

we were going to make a pie,

 the mulberries are disappearing,

 carried off by dragonflies

The grasshoppers and the beetles,

are having banquets in the corn,

the snails are swimming in the nude,

since their shells are getting warm

The frogs are playing hide and seek,

 beneath the lily pads,

 chasing water spiders,

 and laughing at crawdads

The quail are marching through the bushes,

with a parade of chicks behind,

all God’s creatures big and small,

 are celebrating summertime

The bees are busy making honey,

flower to flower one at a time,

while a poet does his best,

to put it all to rhyme

The crickets are taking cat naps,

 until their nightly serenade,

let the birds have all the cherries,

sit down and join me in the shade . . .
